Painting a super glossy piece of furniture can be tricky! We will show you how to prevent the Milk Paint from chipping by using Bonding Agent added to your Milk Paint in the beautiful color Velvet Palm. In just a few simple steps, we take this outdated old looking dresser and give it a modern twist with Milk Paint by Fusion.
In this blog you will learn :
- How to prevent chipping on a glossy finish
- How to use Bonding Agent
- How to get a super smooth finish with Milk Paint by Fusion
- How to use Hemp Oil as a top coat on your painted furniture
Here's what you're going to need for this project:
- “Velvet Palm” Fusion Milk Paint
- Fusion Ultra Grip
- Fusion TSP Alternative
- Staalmeester Flat Ultimate ONE Synthetic #10 (X)
- Series 2010 Staalmeester Flat Brush
- Fusion Hemp Oil
- fine sandpaper
To prep our piece, the commode was given a good cleaning with Fusion TSP Alternative mixed with water. This will remove any grease that may have been left on your piece. We recommend cleaning your furniture piece before the sanding step.
HOW TO USE BONDING AGENT
You'll start first by mixing up your milk paint, then once mixed you'll add your bonding agent. We mixed equal parts milk paint powder to water with a whisk. After you have mixed the powder, let it stand for about 15 minutes and give it another mix, making sure to touch your whisk to the bottom of your paint cup, also mix every so often while you are painting as the pigments like to settle to the bottom, keep your color consistent by stirring frequently.
HOW TO PREVENT CHIPPING ON A GLOSSY FINISH
Fusion Ultra Grip also known as Bonding Agent to our mixed paint since we wanted a clean sleek finish. This will ensure no chipping as it ads an extra adhesive bonder primer. I like to add 1 part Bonding Agent to 1 part mixed Milk Paint. If you're painting with a lighter colour like a white or off white, you may want to mix your milk paint slightly on the thicker side ( there should be no lumps or clumps) as adding the bonding agent will thin it out and you will require many more coats.
If you don't have Bonding Agent you could apply a coat of Fusion Mineral Paint as a base layer, and the Milk Paint will adhere to that without issue.
HOW TO GET A SUPER SMOOTH FINISH WITH MILK PAINT
Scuff-sand using a 220-400 grit sandpaper to allow the milk paint to adhere. The smoother your starting point, the smoother your finish. We used two size brushes for this project. The Staalmeester Flat Ultimate ONE Synthetic #10 (X) for the large surface like the top and Series 2010 Staalmeester Flat Brush to paint the drawer fronts and frame. These brushes offer the highest quality finish and offer super smooth results.
HOW TO USE HEMP OIL AS A MILK PAINT FINISH
Hemp oil is our most favourite top coat as it is incredibly easy to use! Applied with a brush or rag, the Fusion Hemp Oil goes on like liquid gold. Wipe off any excess hemp oil with a lint-free rag and if you want that super smooth finish, take a 600 grit finishing sanding pad and wipe over the surface. This will ensure your piece has a very smooth buttery finish.
